Industrial Symbols for Mineral Processing Flowsheets

📅 April 2025 ⏱ 7 min read ✍️ PfdLabs Team

PfdLabs includes 35 isometric 3D industrial symbols specifically designed for mineral processing and metallurgical flowsheets. Each symbol is rendered in a distinctive 3D isometric style that makes diagrams immediately recognisable as professional engineering documents.

This guide covers all five symbol categories and explains when to use each one.

Comminution

Comminution symbols represent size reduction equipment — the first stage of most mineral processing circuits.

Jaw Crusher
Primary crushing of run-of-mine ore. Typically the first unit in a circuit.
Cone Crusher
Secondary or tertiary crushing. Produces a finer, more uniform product than a jaw crusher.
Ball Mill
Wet or dry grinding to liberate valuable minerals from gangue.
AG Mill
Autogenous grinding — uses the ore itself as grinding media.
HPGR
High Pressure Grinding Roller. Energy-efficient alternative to conventional crushing.

Classification

Classification symbols represent equipment that separates particles by size.

Hydrocyclone
Classifies slurry by centrifugal force. Overflow is fine, underflow is coarse.
Cyclone Cluster
Multiple hydrocyclones operating in parallel for higher throughput.
Vibrating Screen
Separates particles by size using vibration. Used for wet or dry screening.
Spiral Classifier
Classifies slurry using a rotating spiral. Common in older circuits.
Metal Detector
Detects tramp metal in feed streams to protect downstream equipment.

Separation

Separation symbols represent equipment that concentrates valuable minerals.

Flotation Cell
Separates hydrophobic minerals using air bubbles. The core of most sulphide circuits.
Column Flotation
Tall flotation vessel for cleaning and final concentrate production.
Thickener
Gravitational sedimentation to increase slurry density and recover process water.
HR Thickener
High-rate thickener with a smaller footprint than conventional thickeners.
Jig
Gravity separation using pulsating water. Used for coal and heavy minerals.
Shaking Table
Gravity concentration on a vibrating deck. High-precision separation.

Hydromet

Hydromet symbols represent equipment used in hydrometallurgical processing — leaching, solvent extraction and refining.

Agitation Tank
Mechanically agitated tank for leaching or conditioning. Common in gold CIL/CIP circuits.
Carbon Column
Stacked carbon-in-column adsorption for gold recovery.
Filter Press
Pressure filtration for dewatering concentrates or tailings.
Drum Filter
Continuous vacuum filtration. Common for concentrate dewatering.
Desorption Column
Strips gold from loaded carbon using hot caustic solution.

Transport

Transport symbols represent equipment that moves material between unit operations.

Slurry Pump
Transfers slurry between unit operations. The workhorse of any wet processing circuit.
Belt Conveyor
Transports dry or damp material over long distances.
Screw Conveyor
Moves material using a rotating helical screw. Good for short distances.
Bucket Elevator
Vertically lifts bulk material using a series of buckets.
Vibrating Feeder
Controls feed rate to downstream equipment using vibration.
Magnetic Separator
Removes magnetic particles from feed streams.
💡 Tip: Use the search box in the Industrial Symbols panel to quickly find any symbol by name. Recently used symbols appear at the top for faster access.
